What is cell cryopreservation?

Cell cryopreservation is a key technique for long-term cell preservation. In this process, cells are rapidly cooled and placed at extremely low temperatures, which drastically slows down their metabolic activity. By storing the cells in liquid nitrogen (typically -196 °C), the growth and division processes of the cells are temporarily stopped, but their structural and functional properties are preserved intact. When needed, these cells can be reactivated by the thawing process to restore their normal function and be used for experiments.

This technique not only effectively preserves a certain number of cells, but also greatly reduces the risk of cell contamination or other unexpected events, ensuring the long-term availability of cell samples. Cell cryopreservation technology is widely used in scientific research and medical fields,especially in cell line preservation, drug research and development, and genetic engineering.

What special consumables are needed for cell cryopreservation?

A range of specialized consumables are used during cell cryopreservation to ensure that cells are well protected and stored during freezing and thawing. Common cell cryopreservation consumables include:

Cryotubes: Special containers for cell suspensions, usually made of polypropylene (PP), that can withstand ultra-low temperatures (-80°C to -196°C) and provide a good seal to prevent contamination of cells during storage. Sizes are 1.0mL, 2.0mL and 5.0mL.

Cryovials/Boxes: Boxes used to store and organize cell cryovials often are capable of withstanding extremely low temperatures. Box designs are often standardized and suitable for storage racks in all types of freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks. Choosing an efficient and reliable box is the key to the success of your experiment.

By material

In ultra-low temperature freezers at -86°C, paper or polypropylene (PP) boxes are often used to store samples. Both materials exhibit good durability and stability at this low temperature.

However, in a liquid nitrogen environment of -196°C, the choice of material is particularly important. In this case, paper or polycarbonate (PC) boxes are ideal. PP boxes are not recommended for sample storage in liquid nitrogen environments because they become fragile and prone to rupture in very low temperature liquid nitrogen environments.

In order to ensure the safety and accuracy of the experiment, it is necessary to choose the appropriate box material according to the different storage environments. Only by selecting the right materials can the integrity and stability of the sample during storage be ensured, so as to obtain accurate and reliable experimental results.

The selection of boxes depends on the number of cell samples stored and the size of the vials. Common vial sizes are 1.0 mL, 2.0 mL, and 5.0 mL, and boxes are available in 1-inch, 2-inch, and 3.75-inch formats, with different wells (e.g., 81-well or 100-well).
